 Are you looking for something special to add some sparkle to your child’s birthday party? Hi, I'm magician Donald Dunphy. My “Happy Birthday Magic Show” is a high-quality professional presentation suitable for children’s parties. Family-style shows feature audience participation, clean comedy, storytelling, magic tricks, stage illusions, mystery, surprise, and fun. Most of my birthday shows are for children celebrating a 4th through a 10th birthday. Several show options are available, all featuring my special performance style, showmanship, and rapport with the children. A big highlight is all of the audience participation, making the kids the stars of the show as they help make the magic happen. I have 30 years worth of experience as an entertainer (over 3250 shows -- about 1000 specifically for birthday parties), and also 10 years worth of experience as a child care professional, so I understand what an audience needs and plan or adapt accordingly. I know how to handle a shy birthday child, or an excited group of kids, etc. Plus, I always have a new show “up my sleeve” for repeat customers.
Included in the birthday shows are several special touches to make the show a one-of-a-kind memory for your child, and their friends. One special touch is a personalized magic trick with your child’s photo, where they “disappear” and then “reappear”. This makes them the star of the show, as their photo is featured right on one of the tricks. In some of my birthday shows, the birthday child can actually "float" in mid-air in front of their friends, which again makes them feel magical and special. In some of the birthday shows, there is a friendship-building party game called “The Quality Game”, which helps to build your child's self-esteem as their friendships are strengthened. There will be lots of opportunities to take photos or video. All packages include balloon creations and autographed photos for the children. This is a popular option. This 40-minute package adds great fun and memories to a birthday party. For the first part, I present a 30-minute birthday magic show, with lots of age-appropriate magic, excitement, audience participation, and fun. I’ll include a special personalized trick as a part of the show, featuring magic with your child’s photo! (Arrangements to borrow a photo, by mail or e-mail, made at time of booking.)

The Floating Birthday Child Illusion!
At the end of the age-appropriate show, I will perform an illusion that makes it look like the birthday child is floating in the air, in front of his/her friends. (I bring along a couple of folding chairs, then lay a board across the backrests, and have the child lay on their back, horizontally on the board. I then remove the chair that is holding up their feet. Then the board with the birthday child on it suspends horizontally in mid-air, with only a chair balanced under their neck. I pass a hula-hoop around to show no wires, and I also take a Polaroid™ instant photo of your child floating, for them to keep as a souvenir). A very cool experience. Then…
“The Quality Game!”
After the show, for part of the next 15 minutes, I play the FRIENDSHIP-BUILDING “Quality” game, where I ask each child to tell share something that they like about the birthday child, or something that they think the child is good at. As they give their answers, I make each child a fancy MULTI-BALLOON HAT. This creates a “WIN-WIN” situation, because the birthday child gets to hear what their friends like about them (builds friendships), while the other children are being positively reinforced for saying those nice things. The children love getting and wearing their fancy balloon hat. Birthday parents love when I play this game, because it boosts their child’s self-esteem and builds friendships!

After the "Quality Game," I then make a balloon animal for each child.

Q: We’re also considering another entertainer who costs less. Why should we choose you?
A: Choosing the right entertainer can be a tricky thing, especially if you haven’t seen their show before. That’s why I offer a short preview DVD to people who are interested in my show. And that is also why I offer lots of testimonials from other customers on my website (see above). There are many performers out there with different prices, different experience levels, different skill sets, different show content, and different performing styles. No two magicians are even alike. Consequently, each entertainer will impact your party in a different way. I recommend that you take into consideration ALL of the information about a performer when choosing which one to hire, not just their show price vs. show length. Consider who they are, their experience, what they do, what others say about them, the results they bring, if they seem to understand and anticipate your needs, have they worked with groups like yours, etc. Some customers have told me that they were a little concerned with the idea of spending more for entertainment, but they were very happy in the end with their decision to choose my show, and felt it was great value.
Q: Do you offer any souvenirs, to give the children the opportunity to take something home? Do you have ideas for goodie bags? A: Yes, I offer add-on souvenirs. Children love to take home a souvenir to remember the party. I include autographed photos and balloon creations in the silver and gold packages. Some parents wish to plan a party with more souvenirs and giveaways for the guests, often planning to give goodie bags, special gifts, door prizes, etc. Or parents are looking for a hassle-free alternative to goodie bags (no running around, no assembling, etc.). These add-on items are specially chosen to fit the "magic" theme of your party, and to be enjoyed by the children:

I don’t always bring these extra souvenirs to my birthday shows unless prior arrangements are made. So, please remember to place your order in advance of the show date, so I know to bring them with me. Thanks! Q: Do I have to move anything for setup? What do I have to do? A: Sit back and enjoy the show. I’ve performed hundreds of birthday shows in houses of all sizes. I’m self-contained, which means I don’t have to borrow a table. I simply need a small 6' x 6', or 6' x 8', performing area indoors, and can help you move your coffee table, if necessary. I’ll arrive about 10-15 minutes before the show start time to set up. I’ve performed birthday shows in homes, school classrooms, recreation centres, rental halls, restaurants, etc.
Q: Are your shows kid-appropriate? Are your shows age-appropriate?
A: Absolutely! As a full-time professional family and children's entertainer, I don’t use any foul language, or suggestive jokes. In my birthday shows, there are no extreme tricks, no fire, no blades, and no scary tricks.
I design my birthday shows in one of two ways:
Age-specific audience – If the birthday child and most of the guests are the same age, then I provide an age-appropriate show, so the birthday child and their friends have a more enjoyable experience. I would do a different show for a group of 4 year olds, than for a group of 9 year olds, because they have different entertainment and developmental needs. Although some of my birthday shows are age-appropriate, parents and siblings find they enjoy the shows just as much.
Wide age audience – If most of the guests are a wide range of ages, then I provide a show that is suitable for a wider age range (I treat the show like my family audience shows).
Q: Are there animals in your show?
A: No, I don’t use live animals, which may make a mess in your home, or bite your child. My focus is more on the audience participation. I want the children to be the STARS of the show, not an animal.
Q: Do you do outdoor performances?
A: Speaking from experience, I don't really recommend outdoor birthday performances. I find that attention spans are shorter outside. With children (and adults too!), it's important to keep distractions to a minimum. Heat, cold, and hard ground can also affect the audience's comfort. And outdoors, no one can predict a fly-by bee, or a sudden breeze, which may blow away a prop or balloon. Distractions like this can really diminish the flow of the presentation. An indoor show will be a more memorable show for your group.
Q: Can we take photos, or videotape, the show?
A: Yes, I would encourage you to take photos of the show. There will be some great reactions on the kids’ faces, as they smile and laugh. You may also videotape your birthday show, and I would especially encourage you to videotape the kid’s faces as they react to the show. Some parents have told me that their child watches their birthday video again and again.
Q: Do you require a deposit?
A: No, I don’t require a deposit. You can pay me at the show, on the day of your party, after you are happy with everything. I will take care of everything a professional should - I will send you a confirmation letter by mail, arrange to borrow the photo for the personalized trick (if applicable), and give you a call to confirm the show booking, closer to the show date.
